A Vernal man is facing felony charges of Aggravated Burglary and Theft in 3rd District Court for his role in assaulting an elderly Summit County woman and stealing over $1 million dollars in jewelry and cash from her home. 39-year-old Nathan Oosterhof of Vernal was arrested but has not yet entered a plea for the charges, though his alleged partner in crime, 40-year-old Ricky Archuleta, was sentenced last week to up to 15 years in prison after entering a guilty plea to the charges in October. According to the Park Record, a third suspect, 27-year-old Orlando Sandoval of Naples, has also been charged in the case but investigators say his role was less than the other two. The crime took place last January when the men knocked on the door of the 80-year-old woman and entered her home without permission when she answered. They left and came back later that day claiming to have left a cell phone behind. She called the Sheriff’s Office and the men were located but not arrested. The next morning the men arrived again, broke into the woman’s home and stole the reported jewelry and cash. The woman tried to stop them and was pushed hard. She suffered heart problems as a result of the encounter. Oosterhof is being held in Summit County Jail.
