Governor Gary Herbert announced this week that Utah officially has an updated version of the Greater Sage Grouse Conservation Plan. The first version of the plan was implemented in 2013 and in the years since, input has come in from those with the boots on the ground, including from stakeholders in the Uintah Basin. According to a release from the Division of Wildlife Resources, the work of a broad group of stakeholders were crucial in updating the conservation plan released this week. “This new plan,” says DWR Director Mike Fowlks, “will continue to support the collaborative partnerships we’ve built together through a proven model of community-based conservation that works for the people and wildlife of Utah.” The new plans will guide management for the next five years and incorporates new science, knowledge, and lessons learned. “Utah has a long history of successful wildlife management,” shares Governor Gary Herbert. “It is thanks to these efforts that we have been able to protect this species and I trust that these developments will continue to promote healthy habitat for the sage grouse throughout the State.”
