Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office Warns of New Scams

Scammers rarely stick to one area and the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office is warning of two new scams in local circulation for folks to be aware of throughout the region. One scam involves a bogus ‘eviction notice’ that is being emailed and purports to be from the ‘Rock Springs Sheriff’s Office.’ Within the email is an attachment for more information on the phony eviction. “That’s where the scam strikes,” shares Sheriff Mike Lowell. “The scammers want their victims to click on an attachment, at which point they are running a serious risk of introducing a virus into their computer. The crooks objective here is to trick people into opening their attachment.” The lesson here is simple, never click on an attachment from an unknown source. A second scam warned of is a very official-looking certified letter that claims that the recipient has been selected to “acquire an exclusive liquidation asset.” The catch is that a fee must be paid first with the promise of a payout up to $350,000 dollars. Sheriff Lowell urges citizens to not let official-looking letters fool you. To learn about more current scams, visit
