Sky Junk a Common Sight

Chinese sky junk has been the belle of the ball on social media the last week with plenty of Basin residents posting their pictures of the pieces of flaming Chinese rocket that streaked across the sky on July 29th. The rocket was originally launched on June 25th from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center in China on what was called a “technology demonstration mission.” With sky junk a new topic of public concern, NASA has explained that the reentry of rocket bodies and debris is not at all uncommon although most pieces burn up before reaching the ground. In fact, according to the U.S. Space Surveillance Network, as of July 5th, there was a total of 17,729 payloads and rocket debris in orbit.
