Preventing Frozen Water Lines and Pipes

Winter weather conditions can end up costing unprepared property owners a bundle when the frigid cold causes water lines and pipes to freeze. According to Paul Davis of Restoration of Utah, the first step after discovering water damage is to turn off the water supply if it can be done safely. “Depending on how long water was leaking from the pipe, damage can include soaked carpets, hardwood floors, wet drywall, insulation and ceilings. The contents of the structure – furniture, clothing, documents, electronics and equipment – may also be damaged,” explains Davis. “Prolonged wet conditions can lead to mold or other microbial growth.” Smart prevention includes having a building’s plumbing inspected regularly, properly insulating pipes and water lines, and opening faucets with a trickle of water to minimize pipes freezing during cold weather.
