The Division of Wildlife Resources has news that will make eager hunters happy. A bursting deer population is what awaits with 10 days left till the opening of Utah’s general rifle buck deer hunt. The number of deer in Utah is the highest it has been since the 1980s and the ratio of bucks to does is impressive. According to biologists, Utah has a total population of more than 384,000 mule deer meaning the state population has grown by more than 100,000 deer in just four years. The number of bucks in the herd had grown in 2015 to 23 bucks per 100 does and the number of rifle hunters taking a buck had increased as well. In 2013, 37 percent of those with a permit took a deer while in 2015, the success rate had jumped to 43 percent. Biologists say that the success will be as good or better than last year.
