No Such Thing as Safe Ice

When it comes to ice fishing, the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office takes the approach that there is no such thing as safe ice. “Ice conditions can fluctuate drastically over short times and distances,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “Water levels in lakes, and especially in reservoirs like Flaming Gorge, can change. Freezing and thawing weather patterns come and go and submerged springs in certain areas can make a big difference.” The take home message from it all is simple: always exercise caution and never become complacent. Ice fishing safety tips include checking ice every 100 to 150 feet. Never fish alone. Wear a flotation device. Avoid taking motorized vehicles of any kind out onto the ice.
