Flaming Gorge Ranger District Planning Prescribed Burns for April

The Flaming Gorge Vernal Ranger District is planning prescribed burns as weather permits in April. The prescribed fires will primarily be used within Ponderosa Pine stands on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains. The average natural fire interval of the Ashley National Forest is around 20 years. “In the absence of frequent fire, fuel build-up results in high-intensity, more severe wildfires that can result in high levels of mortality across entire ponderosa pine stands,” shares the Vernal Ranger District. “Managing natural fires for resource benefit and conducting prescribed burns at regular intervals benefit ponderosa pine ecosystems and create healthier, more resilient forests.” There will be signs on the roadway to inform travelers that the burns are taking place as the burning activity may be visible from Highway 44.
