An avalanche in western Colorado caught two men in its grips on Tuesday. According to the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, the avalanche occurred in the Flat Tops around 12:15pm. While both men were caught up in the avalanche, one was able to free himself while the other was not. The survivor did find his friend but resuscitation efforts proved fruitless. The man was able to use his cell phone to call for help and after an extended search, Search and Rescue teams located the uninjured man. Because it was after dark, crews had to wait until Wednesday to recover the deceased man’s body. This is the first fatality in Colorado this year caused by avalanche.
