The Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce continues to drum up support for the upcoming Burbot Bash as Daggett County hopes for plenty of visitors to help make a dent in the overrun fish population. The Burbot Bash started in 2009 and has expanded from an on-ice clinic to a major cash prize event. Burbot are considered an invasive species in Flaming Gorge that were illegally stocked and have devastating effects on the sport fishery. Burbot are best caught at night and in the winter, making this event the perfect opportunity to remove as many burbot as possible from Flaming Gorge. “One approach to suppressing the burbot population is to enlist the assistance of anglers to harvest and remove as many as possible,” shares Wyoming Game Fisheries Biologist Robert Keith. “Burbot are vulnerable to over-harvest so anglers can have a significant impact on populations.” This year’s event will be held January 20th through the 22nd with cash prizes up to $10,000 to be awarded.
