Attorney General’s Office on Restitution Sought in Trooper Arson Case

The Office of the Utah Attorney General provided an update on the restitution order the state is seeking against former Utah Highway Patrol trooper Rex Olsen in the Maeser Highway Fire case. The state is requesting a restitution order in the amount of $482,392.76. That amount includes the damage caused to property and land as well as the cost of response to and suppressing of the fire. The Attorney General’s announcement also stated that Olsen’s charges were for deliberately starting the fire on June 9th and that at the time he set the fire, he was on duty as a UHP Trooper. Olsen entered a guilty plea to Arson on November 14th and was sentenced on April 17th. His sentence of 1 to 15 years in the Utah State Prison was suspended. Instead he will serve 180 days in the Uintah County Jail followed by 36 months of Probation and Parole. His restitution hearing is scheduled for June 27th.
